States
fall, empires break up,
dynasties become extinct
but the memory of a true
national icon like Shivaji
Maharaj remains an imperishable
historical legacy for
an entire human race.
This legend has been a
source of inspiration
and pride to past generations
and will continue to inspire
generations in future.
The spirit still remains.
The flame still burns.
What lies inside this
350 yr old legacy which
refuses to be perished
by time?
To
answer this questions
standing as silent sentinels
to history are the 350
odd forts of Maharashtra.
Beaten by the sea-waves,
lashed at by the torrential
Deccan rains, or scorched
in the blazing sun, stand
imposing ramparts and
crumbling walls. The last
lingering memories of
Maharashtra’s martial
times. Nowhere in the
world would you encounter
such a profusion of fort.
And such a variety. Sited
on island , as at Sindhudurga
or guarding the sea as
at Vijaydurga or among
the sahyadri hills, as
at Rajgad whose ziq zaq
walls and rounded bastions
sit like a scepter and
crown amidst hills turned
mauve.
History
of forts of Maharashtra
is history of Chhatrapati
shivaji Maharaj and history
of his battle for justice
and freedom of Hindusthan.
He was the king of forts. On
his whole life he ruled
on more than 375 forts.
These forts were backbone
of his victorious campaign.
Within
every fort is hidden a
different memory of the
war fought for freedom,self
respect and existence.
These forts numbed by
sun and sleet, have not
only been witness to changing
times, but have also shaped
them and within their
walls throb the heart
beat of history.
But
today…
The
forts are damaged and
becoming Hot Spots for
Rev Parties………
The
main aim of Shivateertha
Mohim is to create a common
platform for initiating
and cumulating the efforts
of renowned historians,
avid trekkers and fort
lovers for safeguarding
and maintaining the forts
which are the witnesses
of our glorious history.
We arrange activities
to regularly clean these
monuments by clearing
the litter left behind
by tourists, removing
the garbage gathered in
the water tanks and removing
the shrubs that threaten
to harm these historical
structures.
The Shivateertha Mohim
has been very successful
in bridging the attempts
of many related NGO's
and Government.
